Molluscum

Molluscum is a smooth, pearly, flesh-colored skin growth caused by a virus. They begin as small "bumps" or elevations and may grow as large as a pencil eraser. Many have a central depression.

Usually molluscum is found on the face and frequently on the eyelids. It can also be found elsewhere on the body. Molluscum can be itchy and the skin around the growths may become infected. The growths persist for long periods of time and sometimes spontaneously disappear. The molluscum virus can be passed from one person to another by direct contact.

Although molluscum may eventually go away, the lesions (growths) spread easily, may become infected, itchy, irritated, and are cosmetically unattractive. For these reasons, they are often removed. Molluscum is treated by removal by a doctor by freezing, electrosurgery, or excision with a curet (knife).
